Understanding dim weight
In small parcel shipping, the number on the scale isn't the number on your invoice. Dimensional weight pricing changed how carriers charge for every box. If you don't understand it, you're almost certainly overpaying. Here's what dim weight is, why it exists, and how to keep it from eating your margins.
What is dimensional weight?
Dimensional weight (also called DIM weight or volumetric weight) is how carriers price a package based on the space it occupies rather than what it actually weighs. The logic is simple. A lightweight, bulky package takes up more room on a truck or airplane, so it contributes less to the carrier's overall load capacity than its scale weight suggests.
To put a number on that space, carriers use a standard formula built from the package's length, width, and height.
The dimensional weight formula
DIM weight = (Length × Width × Height) ÷ DIM factor
The DIM factor is a constant that converts cubic inches into pounds. It varies from carrier to carrier and is set by the shipping company. That's exactly why carrier management matters: knowing each carrier's DIM factor lets you route every box to the carrier that prices it best.
Why dimensional weight matters
Before dimensional weight pricing spread across the industry, shipping costs were based almost entirely on actual weight. That system quietly favored light-but-large packages, even when they hogged space in delivery vehicles.
Carriers introduced dim weight pricing to close that gap and push shippers to pack tighter. The result is a pricing model that weighs both mass and volume: more equitable, more efficient to transport, and lighter on the environment. It also means your packaging choices now show up directly on your shipping bill.
How dim weight affects small parcel shipping costs
Here's the rule that decides your invoice: carriers calculate both the actual weight and the dimensional weight of each package, then bill you for whichever is higher.
A worked example. Say a package measures 10" × 8" × 6" and weighs 2 pounds on the scale, and the carrier's DIM factor is 166:
DIM weight = (10 × 8 × 6) ÷ 166 = 2.89 pounds
The dimensional weight (2.89 lb) beats the actual weight (2 lb), so the carrier charges you for a 2.89-pound shipment. Your box just gained nearly a pound of billable air.
Four ways to reduce dimensional weight costs
- Optimize your packaging. Use appropriately sized boxes and materials that minimize empty space. Every cubic inch you don't ship is money kept.
- Skip the excessive padding. Protect your product, absolutely. But padding beyond what transit requires inflates dimensions and, with them, cost.
- Invest in custom packaging. Custom packaging built to your product's exact dimensions eliminates wasted space entirely, and looks better at the door, too.
- Consolidate shipments. Combining multiple items into one package, where practical, reduces total dimensional weight across an order.
The bottom line
Dimensional weight isn't going away. Shippers who optimize packaging and understand each carrier's DIM factor save on every single box; shippers who don't, subsidize the ones who do.
